Common Myths about Yoga Debunked

Yoga has become more popular in the United States over the last couple of decades. The Yoga Alliance published a study about the growth in popularity of yoga in 2016. Since then, it has continued to grow. Many who are unfamiliar with yoga see images of skinny yogis twisting themselves into an artistic pose and think that is what yoga is all about. Yoga can be for any body, young or old, fit or new to exercise, arthritic or post-surgery. Just as we understand that exercising is great for our health without needing to become a bodybuilder, we can enjoy yoga without needing to worry about attaining a perfect and artistic pose.

What are some common misconceptions about yoga?

Myth 1: Yoga is for women.

Answer: Although more women practice yoga than men, the number of men who practice yoga has been increasing. Yoga is for any gender.  

Myth 2: Yoga is for the fit and trim.

Answer: Yoga is for anyone. Your body is proudly and uniquely yours, and you can do something special for yourself by practicing yoga. Be sure you choose a class that fits your health history and goals. Also, be sure to find a well-trained yoga teacher based on your needs.

Myth 3: Yoga is all about sitting still and can’t be a good workout.

Answer: Yoga is much more than that and has many health benefits.

Myth 4: I am not flexible so I can’t do yoga.

Answer: Yoga doesn’t need to be moving your body into a pretzel shape. There are different types of yoga, and there are variations in poses for your unique body. Gentle yoga can help with arthritis. Find a yoga practice and teacher that does not focus on the look of the pose, but rather on the target or goal and offers variations for your needs.

It is important to have a well-trained yoga practitioner to guide in selecting poses that will support your body and not cause additional problems.
