Why an Internship?

As a Yoga Alliance Qualified Continuing Education Provider, Certified Yoga Therapist, owner of two businesses (one for 20 years), SAM Sather is offering a therapeutic yoga teacher and entrepreneur internship with Dogwood Studio.

The International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) stated at the global conference June 2019 (SYTAR) that there is a significant increase in the need for therapeutic yoga practitioners and services and will continue to grow but without the population to fill it. SAM Sather anticipated this to be the case years ago for many reasons. “The time is getting right where the need is outweighing the supply.” This is the reason for her therapeutic yoga focus and career integration.

Testimonial:

"I had a lovely new person come to my class. After class, she came up to me and was thrilled and amazed that she was able to get off the ground from the spiraling instruction I provided during class, thanks to what I have learned from you! It was quite rewarding to see her joy and to pass on this way of moving."

The main goals of this internship program are to:

  • support students in yoga therapy programs with experiences that can serve to support their program requirements with mentorship or projects

  • take 200 - 500 hour trained yoga teachers that have some additional medical professional background and provide an internship that will support a special therapeutic teaching approach for group and private sessions, along with how to successfully establish a strategy for business and/or sustainable clientele

  • potentially develop unique staff team members to support the growth and expansion of services of Dogwood Studio at and beyond the studio

Internship Length and Hours:

Research shows that to establish a new competency, one must have a blended learning environment, practicum, evaluation, and time. The internship length and curriculum have flexibility to meet the goals and experience level of the candidate. For example, someone not in a yoga therapy program would benefit from a longer internship, six months is an ideal timeframe to support the learning curve to obtain insights and confidence. Because of this, the internship program can be as long as 110 hours over 6 or more months. The monthly hour requirement can be negotiated and is designed around the situation of the intern and the director, i.e., approximately 16-20 hours. The hours include independent learning, mentoring, class observation and assisting, demos, and assessments. The internship agreement lists the agreed upon requirements and is signed by both the intern and the director.

Example of Internship Components:

  • Class & Private Session Demos and Feedback

  • Enneagram Assessment

  • Principles of Practice of Therapeutic Yoga & Mindfulness Teaching

  • Therapeutic Teaching Techniques: Group Classes

  • Therapeutic Teaching Techniques: Private Sessions
