The next Osteoporosis and Yoga Workshop is Saturday, March 9th, 2024. Learn what postures to avoid and how you can modify postures to gain the same benefits and target, while being safe for your bones. Learn more on our event page.
We invite you to join us in the next hybrid offering of Osteoporosis and Yoga on August 20th 1-5 pm EST. In this workshop, you will experience healthy movements of the spine and have time to ask all of your questions that you might have regarding osteoporosis and yoga.
Dogwood Studios stresses the importance of modifying one’s practice to the body’s particular biology, biography, and needs. When teaching our yoga classes, we take into consideration movements that are needed to keep your spine and hips safe whether or not you are at risk of fracture due to bone density decrease and osteoporosis. We offer numerous variations of postures to help you find your version. And we recognize that practicing yoga looks different day to day especially as we age. However, in a 75 minute group yoga class, we often don’t have time to discuss why some postures might harm aging bones and how the continuum of practice helps us practice safely. Our Osteoporosis and Yoga Workshop provide ample time to take a deep dive into the intersection of osteoporosis, yoga and functional movement.
Research continues to show that yoga is a practice that promotes a healthy lifestyle. The ability to stay active and have bone bearing exercises is an important component of aging. As we have cited before, yoga is good for your balance, bones, flexibility, brain and more. However, certain poses and movements are risky for those living, knowingly or not, with osteoporosis. As the body changes, one does not need to stop doing yoga; rather, one should be aware how their body moves to practice safely. Although not always painful, when the spine is in a forward flexion it is loaded and there is a greater risk of vertebral fractures. Understanding your bones, ensures that you can continue to practice yoga safely and reduce your risk of fracture.
We hope that you can join us in our the next offering of Osteoporosis and Yoga Workshop. Sam Sather, certified yoga therapist and RN, will explain how the body’s natural loss of bone density impacts our movement. For years, SAM Sather, a certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) has been working with seniors and training yoga teachers on how to safely guide seniors through a carefully chosen practice. Osteoporosis or osteopenia should not stop you from participating in yoga or any exercises that you love.
