When you look for images of yoga, you often see young thin women in acrobatic positions. Which is probably in stark contrast to what you experience when you practice yoga. Often when practicing yoga you might find a sense of calm and clarity. Yoga is known to help with stress. And when you exercise it is good for your heart and respiration. But yoga can also promote healthy bones, when done correctly and safely.  Some yoga postures and movements are associated with risks for those with osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis happens when bones lose their quality and density, and this can increase their chances of breaking. Osteoporosis is a silent disease and most people that have it do not know if they have fractured a bone except that they may measure shorter or have intermittent back pain (to name one sign and symptom). A Ten-year study on the effect of yoga on bone quality saw qualitative improvements in bone quality in yoga practitioners. When practicing yoga, you can improve your posture, coordination and balance which can help prevent falls. Those with osteoporosis are at higher risk of hip fractures if they fall.

Not all yoga practices are equal. There are special considerations to take into account when dealing with osteoporosis. SAM Sather, a certified yoga therapist and RN, is teaching an osteoporosis and yoga workshop for you to learn how to practice or teach yoga for those at risk for fractures from osteoporosis. Having osteoporosis does not mean you should not do yoga, but empowering a student about how to keep theirself safe is essential.

Sam has taught this osteoporosis and yoga workshop for a number of years. It is the perfect combination of therapy and practical application. You learn concrete examples of what yoga postures are safe for your body and have plenty of time to practice doing it so you can be confident that you can do them on your own.
