Depression is a common mental illness with around 8% of Americans afflicted. Depression results from a complex interaction between biological, social, and psychological factors. Individuals who have gone through negative life events such as unemployment, the death of a loved one, or trauma have higher incidents. Common treatments include a combination of medication and/or therapy. Although effective, this methodology may not be a good choice for everyone, and some remain with symptoms despite treatment.

A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that practicing yoga reduced depressive symptoms. In this paper, 19 studies were analyzed and included depression that individuals may be experiencing due to other mental health conditions. It found that depression was most improved with a greater number of yoga sessions per week. Although the paper focused on yoga as physical activity, mindfulness such as mindful movement yoga and meditation can also help reduce depression symptoms. Always be safe and don’t stop any therapy that your doctor has prescribed. Discuss adding yoga or meditation to your treatment with your provider.
