Could it be Menopause?

Could it be Menopause?

Not sure exactly how to know if you might be going through menopause? You may start to notice changes in your health and well-being as you enter your forties and fifties but these aren’t always recognized as being linked to menopause. Changing levels of estrogen, testosterone and other hormones can encourage a range of symptoms. Some of these are classic menopause symptoms but others can be more surprising. If you have any of these symptoms and you’re in the ballpark age for menopause, think about speaking to your doctor about having your hormone levels checked.

Finding Your Balance, Catching Your Breath: The Benefits Of Yoga And Writing When Coping With Grief

Finding Your Balance, Catching Your Breath: The Benefits Of Yoga And Writing When Coping With Grief

By Mitzi Quint, LCSW, PLLC

Grief is a natural and normal response to loss — but we do not FEEL normal while grieving. Anything but! We can be easily overwhelmed by surprising, unsettling changes in ourselves and in our world. Grief is not just sadness or other emotions; it is an all-encompassing experience that profoundly affects us in body, mind and spirit.

Yoga and writing can be especially helpful during this difficult time because both fully engage body, mind, and spirit. Woven together as complementary practices, they quickly invite discovery and healing on a profound level.

Benefits of Yoga Therapy for Chronic Pain

The American College of Physicians now recommends yoga and other alternatives to prescription drugs for chronic low-back pain, saying that opioids and more invasive treatments should be used only after other approaches have failed. A number of other key organizations, including the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health, agree and have laid out their position in resources such as Moving Beyond Medications.

SAM Sather and Jaclyn Sappah are certified yoga therapists through the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT) https://www.iayt.org/default.aspx and have specialized training to help those with living with Chronis Pain. Pain that lasts 3 months or more—well beyond the time most injuries take to “heal”—is usually considered to be chronic. Chronic pain, including low-back pain, results from the interaction of many causes. This complexity makes it difficult to treat and is one factor behind the opioid crisis in the United States and elsewhere.

In 2017 NIH published a study noting that certain types of yoga practices can be as effective as physical therapy. https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/yoga-eases-moderate-severe-chronic-low-back-pain. Caution: be sure you work with a Yoga Therapist that has been trained in this area and also be sure that the yoga class is designed for this. Having a private session with a Yoga Therapist to work with you individually is a smart idea.

What is Reiki?

Reiki’s History and Use in Western Medicine Settings

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is an ancient Japanese hands-on healing art, often described as “energy healing.” It was developed in Japan in the 1920s by Dr. Mikao Usui and brought to the United States in 1937 by Hawayo Takata. Reiki continues to gain popularity in the West as a useful Complementary and Alternative Medicine, with The Center for Reiki Research (2019) listing “76 hospitals, medical clinic and hospice programs where Reiki is offered as a standard part of care,” including prestigious medical institutions such as Duke, Columbia Presbyterian, and John Hopkins. According to Miles (2008), Reiki “is being delivered in the most stressful of settings—the cardiac-care unit, the delivery room, the operating room, intensive-care units, and the emergency room (p. 205).

Meditation: Why, What, When, Where, & How

“I can’t sit still long enough to meditate.” “My mind is too busy.” “I do plenty of things to relax, I don’t need to meditate.” “I don’t have time to meditate.”

~said every meditator at some point

Why meditate? What’s the point?

We live in a society that never shuts off. No doubt, the creation of the internet has brought much good! Instantaneous connection to individuals across the world, the ability to research and learn anything from the click of a button, innovation, security, creativity, and the list goes on. However, in a virtually boundaryless society, we no longer have time for disconnection and stillness.
