Meet Guest Teacher Melissa Russell

We are offering numerous hybrid lunchtime learnings this May and June after Wednesday’s Mindful Movement and Yoga at 11:45am - 1pm. Lunchtime Learning is an opportunity to deepen your practice.

Aviva had the pleasure of sitting down with her friend Melissa Russell for an interview about the upcoming iRest Lunchtime Learning on May 17th 11:45 am - 1:00 pm.

Melissa is a certified yoga therapist; a 500 hour registered yoga teacher trained in ashtanga, anusara, and pelvic floor health; and an iRest level 2 meditation teacher. Melissa began her yoga teaching journey over 20 years ago while leading innovative teams in the world of publishing and educational technology.

Listen to the short interview with Melissa about iRest on the Lunchtime Learning Event Page or read the full transcript.

In the interview, Melissa explains, “iRest is a meditation practice, or I consider it to be one. Like many meditation practices, iRest helps us cultivate attention, concentration, and present-centered thinking.”

“The reason the iRest practice appeals to me is that it’s more than doing the practice. Many of us do meditation and find a sense of stillness - that’s often what we're hoping for. iRest is different because it takes the experience of doing the meditation, and while you're doing it, it actually gives us tools that we can use in everyday life. So it kind of takes the things that we do in the practice, and lets us apply those to our lives outside of the practice.”

iRest is a yoga nidra meditation that takes you on a journey through the koshas (the feeling, breath, mind, wisdom, and joy bodies) to facilitate deep rest and healing.

Why does iRest work?

  • iRest is more accessible to people who have trouble with meditation practices.

  • iRest helps us develop a deep sense of peace, ease, and security to carry with us in daily life.

  • iRest provides tools to use when difficult sensations, emotions, and feelings come up.

  • iRest drops us into brain wave states where our bodies can rest and repair.

  • iRest has been endorsed by the U.S. Army Surgeon General, recognized by the Defense Centers for Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury as a form of complementary and alternative medicine.

  • iRest has also been shown to be effective in scientific trials for conditions including chronic pain, sleep problems, depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
